As a part of its smart initiative programme, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has approved the testing of autonomous taxis which have now made their way to the Gitex Technology week in Dubai.

Reports suggest that the self-driving taxis are designed in partnership with Dubai Silicon Oasis and DG World. According to RTA, the autonomous taxis will contribute to the Smart Self-Driving mobility strategy that is expected to transform 25 percent of Emirate’s total transport to autonomous driving tech.

The self-driving vehicles in question are currently being tested on some of the routes around Dubai Silicon Oasis. The cars are equipped with multiple cameras and sensors that are reportedly capable of viewing traffic and road conditions, controlling the vehicle, avoiding a collision, and monitoring traffic signals and lane demarcations. The new fleet will greatly benefit the commuters to be connected with mass transport systems such as Dubai Metro and Dubai Tram.

The RTA has currently deployed a Mercedes-Benz in beige livery which is being tested at a maximum speed of 35kmph. The car will have a standby driver who would take over the controls in case of an emergency. Apart from the driver, the car will accommodate four more passengers.
