Porsche has expanded its range of compact SUVs with the addition of a more powerful Macan S. The new model features a new engine, tuned chassis, enhanced braking system, and a streamlined design.
The 2019 Porsche Macan S makes 354hp and 480Nm out of its new turbocharged V6 petrol engine with a particulate filter. The specs represent a boost of 14hp in power and 20Nm in torque over the previous model. Equipped with the Sport Chrono Package, the Macan S cracks the ton in 5.1 seconds, which is a tenth of a second quicker than its predecessor. The car’s top speed is 254kph (limited), while the fuel consumption is rated at 8.9l/100km (NEDC-correlated).
The turbocharger of the engine is placed in the central ‘V’ of the engine, resulting in short exhaust gas paths between the combustion chambers and the turbo to ensure immediate, faster response. The twin-scroll turbo delivers high torque at low engine speeds, making the motor very tractable. Specific output of the engine has increased to 118hp from 113hp, and emissions have gone down in the process.
Porsche has given the Macan S a lot of electronic and physical suspension and chassis updates. For starters, the spring forks on the front axle are now aluminium instead of steel. Rear wheels and tyres are bigger than the front pair. The wheels themselves are lighter than before, contributing to the reduced unsprung mass of the Macan. This, in turn, aids the car’s steering to be sharper and more responsive. Porsche Traction Management (PTM) four-wheel-drive and Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) come together with the height-adjustable air suspension and Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus) to improve the compact SUV’s dynamics and handling.
Braking is another area where the 2019 Porsche Macan S scores highly. The pedal feel is different thanks to the new 300g-lighter pedal which acts on the brake master cylinder via a shortened lever arm. This results in a more urgent braking response with the driver being able to feel a precise pressure point due to the firm connection. The front brake discs are larger at 360mm and thicker at 36mm. All-new brake pads are copper-free. Porsche also offers optional Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake(s) (PCCB).
The Macan S also features revised lighting now with LEDs all around, a 10.9-inch Full-HD touchscreen inside including navigation, smartphone pairing, two audio interfaces as well as intelligent voice control. The 2019 Porsche Macan S is now available for order worldwide.
