After wowing the world with the radical R1T pickup and R1S SUV, Rivian is working on a rally car with high ground clearance. Looks like we are in for a treat from the company.
While Tesla may be the name that springs forth to mind when anyone talks about EVs, a few years down the line almost all manufacturers will have their own lineup of electric cars. Several startups are also battering the doors of the EV space with unique offerings.
One of the most promising startups is Rivian. The company unveiled two vehicles at the Los Angeles Motor Show this year: The R1T pickup and R1S SUV. However, the third vehicle Rivian is planning has us excited. Speaking to Autocar at the LA Motor Show, Rivian founder and CEO RJ Scaringe said the brand’s third entry will be a rally-inspired performance car.
“The third vehicle will have a smaller wheelbase (than the R1S SUV) and will be the Rivian interpretation of a rally car with a lot of ground clearance,” said Scaringe. He also said he believes all Rivians should offer a “combination of on- and off-road performance, and a level of functionality that’s unique in its space.” This means that the electric rally car will not be some sort of stripped down, barely street-legal race machine. Scaringe went on record saying that the car’s performance will be “bananas.”
Rivian builds its cars on a supremely scalable skateboard-like electric platform, which leads Scaringe to claim the firm can build all sorts of cool cars. “You could build an 800-hp R1T truck or a goods delivery van, or a shuttle bus,” he said. AAlthough the idea of an 800hp electric truck sounds seriously cool, the forthcoming electric rally car has piqued our interest as much, if not more.
