Volkswagen revealed the newest Passat at the Detroit Auto Show held recently. The understated, elegant sedan is confirmed for launch in the Middle East.
Volkswagen already sells the current-generation Passat in the GCC and is set to introduce a new-generation car after summer this year. A host of changes both inside and outside will be on offer along with new body colours and interior trims.
A substantially revised body and new wheels are the Passat's highlights.
For 2019, Volkswagen has given the Passat a bigger, bolder front fascia. The grille is wider and deeper than before. Its top half lines up with the headlamps which are bigger than before. All-LED lighting is standard across all trims. The rear bumper receives a new design, and the boot lid carries “PASSAT” lettering spread across its width similar to Volkswagen’s other sedan, Arteon.
Rounding up the refreshed exterior are new wheels. Volkswagen offers 17-inch alloy wheels as standard with an option to upgrade to 18 or 19-inch designs.
Inside, there is richer upholstery and trim to be found all around the cabin. The upholstery gets new colours. Entry-level trims of the 2020 Volkswagen Passat make do with fabric upholstery while higher trims get leatherette or Nappa leather. Also on offer is a new infotainment system with an intuitive interface accessed from a better touchscreen than before.
Volkswagen sells the Passat in the US with a 174hp 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four motor. For the Middle Eastern market, however, the German carmaker could offer a 2.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol motor good for 170hp and 240Nm mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.
Volkswagen has added bold lettering to the Passat's boot lid much the same as its biggers sedan, Volkswagen Arteon.
Of its range of sedans, the Volkswagen Passat has been the most consistent model in sales numbers since its introduction in 1972. The company has given it well-timed nips and tucks that have been just right for its times. For 2019, the new Passat improves its game, bringing fresh design and features to the table. The 2020 Volkswagen Passat will be launched in the GCC nations later this year after summer.
