Lexus had designed a concept car painted in bold yellow for the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in August 2018. The Lexus LC 500 Inspiration Edition is now moving to production, with 100 examples rolling off the assembly line.
Lexus has gone to great lengths to ensure the production LC 500 Inspiration doesn’t stray too far away from its concept form. This applies to the interior as well as the bodywork.
The Lexus LC 500 Inspiration Edition does not feature any mechanical upgrades.
The Lexus LC 500 Flare Yellow still retains its vibrant colour for production, much like the concept. An inscription on the carbon fibre door sill covers marks each of the 100 cars as part of the exclusive run. The semi-aniline seats feature contrast yellow stitching while the doors have yellow inserts, again similar to the concept. The dashboard, centre console, and glovebox also feature yellow contrast stitching. The production LC 500 Inspiration also carries over the concept’s carbon fibre roof and grille inserts.
Lexus has chosen to fit the production coupe with split five-spoke design alloys as opposed to the concept’s snazzy dark cross-spoked alloys. Wheel size is consistent at 21 inches all around.
As for mechanicals, Lexus left this area untouched. The Lexus LC 500 Inspiration Edition gets a 5.0-lire naturally aspirated V8 producing 471hp and 540Nm. The engine drives the rear wheels through a 10-speed automatic transmission. The LC 500 can sprint to 100kph in 4.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 270kph.
The interior trim is defined by the Flare Yellow colour seen in piping, door inersts, and contrast stitching.
Lexus has been notoriously slow in updating, or introducing new, sports models. The production LC 500 has been the flag-bearer for Lexus performance vehicles, joined recently by the RC F. However, we know that Lexus is capable of making cars such as the fearsome LF-A which boasted of a snarling V10. The Lexus LC 500 Inspiration Edition is a cosmetic makeover. It does look good, but does nothing to hide the fact that Lexus still doesn’t have a new car for us.
Now if the company were to launch the seductive LC 500 Convertible, it might find renewed interest in the brand. It remains to be seen when the Japanese automaker has planned the launch.
