Volkswagen unveiled the 2019 Jetta last year, but it was not until Thursday that it took the wraps off the model that we are interested in. At this year’s Chicago Motor Show on Thursday, the German automaker revealed the all-new Jetta GLI sports sedan.
For starters, the Jetta GLI is essentially a GTI package gowned in a compact sedan body. At its heart is a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four engine that now delivers 228hp and 350Nm of torque, up by 18hp and 55Nm from the outgoing model.
Volkswagen will be offering a 35th Anniversary model with a red stripe along the grille combined with a handful of blackened elements.
Power is supplied to the front wheels either through a six-speed manual or an optional seven-speed automatic transmission. While official performance figures have not been confirmed yet, reports suggest that the new Jetta can crack 100kph in less than six seconds. It comes with a limited-slip differential and an independent sport-tuned strut-type suspension that lowers height by 15.2mm compared to the standard Jetta.
Braking duties on the Jetta GLI are handled by the same apparatus as seen on the Golf R consisting of 340mm discs up front housed within a set of 18-inch wheels. Other tweaks on the outside come in the form of a more aggressive front fascia incorporating a black honeycomb grille. At the rear, one can find a subtle spoiler and dual exhaust tips finished in chrome. LEDs are used for both the head and taillights.
Features that have been derived from the standard Jetta include the digital instrument cluster, panoramic sunroof, and Beats Audio sound system.
To mark its launch, Volkswagen will be offering a 35th Anniversary model with a red stripe along the grille combined with a handful of blackened elements such as wheels, roof, mirror caps, and rear spoiler. In addition to these, Volkswagen will also feature its DCC adaptive dampers as standard on the special model. Features that have been derived from the standard Jetta include the digital instrument cluster, panoramic sunroof, and Beats Audio sound system.
