Bentley revealed its four-wheeled behemoth, the Bentayga Speed, on Thursday. According to Bentley, Bentayga Speed is now the world’s fastest production SUV.
Bentley’s claim to building the world’s fastest production SUV is shrouded in a little confusion. At 304kph, the Lamborghini Urus is just 1kph slower than the Bentayga Speed. However, in a quarter-mile drag race, it’s the Urus that is quicker off the line, clocking 100kph in 3.6 seconds, versus the Brit’s time of 3.9 seconds. Other fast SUVs like Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio and Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk are at least 16kph slower than the Bentayga Speed.
The Bentley Bentayga might be slower off the line than the Lamborghini Urus, but it has a higher top speed.
A tweaked version of the 6.0-litre W12 motor powers the Bentley Bentayga Speed, generating 626hp and a massive 900Nm of torque. Bentley certainly has a penchant for massively powerful engines, and it shows in the super SUV. The engine specifications reflect an increase of 26hp and 1.5Nm over the regular (relatively) Bentayga.
So how is the Bentayga Speed faster than the Urus with just a modest increase in power? Lamborghini has given the Urus an output of 641hp, and it is significantly lighter than the Bentayga too. Engineers at Bentley heavily revised the car’s eight-speed automatic transmission to minimize power losses. There is no change to the SUV’s power modes, and a custom slot to set up a unique combination of driving characteristics is still present.
Bentley’s active roll bars have been recalibrated for a more performance-oriented feel. You also get beefy carbon-ceramic brakes and a spoiler to convey the Bentayga Speed’s sporty intent. While side skirts and front and rear bumpers are body-coloured, a nice contrast is provided by blacked-out headlights, taillights, and grille. Buyers can choose from three finishes for the bespoke 22-inch, 10-spoke wheels: silver, dark tint, or black.
Typically luxurious interiors that belie the sort of mayhem this super SUV can bring forth.
The 2020 Bentley Bentayga Speed is suddenly one of the leading offerings in the premium performance SUV segment. For one, it claims to be slightly faster than the Lamborghini Urus, while outpacing Jeep and Alfa outright. However, the SUV wars are far from over. Aston Martin and Ferrari will pitch in their own performance SUVs by the end of this year in the form of DBX and Purosangue respectively. Lamborghini won’t be taking this lying down, and will have already signed the go-ahead on a Urus SV. The coming few months are going to witness heated battles in the newly-created super SUV space.
