GMC has introduced the next generation of its heavy-hauling pickup, the 2020 GMC Sierra HD. The new Sierra Heavy Duty combines increased trailering capacity with technologies designed to provide customers with an enhanced towing experience.

Duncan Aldred, Vice President of Global GMC, said, “The all-new 2020 Sierra HD is the most capable heavy-duty truck that we’ve ever offered. For customers who demand a premium, innovative heavy-duty truck that supports their passions, the next-generation Sierra HD can pull like a pro.”

The 2020 GMC Sierra HD is unapologetically huge, right from the design details to the dimensions.

Enhanced towing capability

GMC introduced a proprietary technology called ProGrade Trailering System that offers additional features and functionality for the 2020 Sierra HD. “Trailering is the most important consideration for Sierra Heavy Duty customers, and the new features and technologies in the 2020 Sierra HD make it easier than ever to hitch a trailer and tow it confidently,” said Jaclyn McQuaid, vehicle chief engineer, Heavy Duty Trucks. “We’ve developed this new truck to offer the greatest trailering experience ever offered by GMC.”

Owners of the Sierra HD can access an available smart trailer technology designed to operate select features of the iN-Command control system through the myGMC mobile app available on both iOS and Android. The control system acts as the central hub of operations to monitor and control an array of systems in trailers equipped with the next-gen technology.

Increased dimensions

There are no two ways about it: The 2020 GMC Sierra HD has a commanding, bold design with larger proportions. It is taller and longer, and epitomizes GMC’s signature bold design and attention to detail. Matt Noone, director of GMC exterior design, spoke about the truck: “We took every opportunity to visually express the strength and capability that lies beneath the surface. The elevated hood line, the strong shoulders, the striking front grille — these cues communicate the strength and performance that have been engineered and built into each and every Sierra Heavy Duty.”

The heavy-duty pickup boasts of premium interiors with features never seen before in its segment.

Drivetrain

GMC continues offering the legendary Duramax 6.6-litre turbocharged diesel V8 that makes 445hp and a monstrous 1234Nm of torque. Paired to a 10-speed Allison automatic transmission, which is incidentally the first-ever to be offered in a heavy-duty pickup, the Duramax is able to perform strongly whilst returning optimal fuel efficiency. Finally, the 2020 GMC Sierra HD is rated to tow loads up to 13,500kg. Yes, that’s 13.5 tonnes. The Duramax is impressive indeed.

The 2020 GMC Sierra HD will be commercially available in the second half of 2019 in two guises: 2500HD and 3500HD dual rear wheel and single rear wheel configurations.
