Mercedes-Benz has unveiled its new GLE53 4Matic+ahead of its official launch at this year’s Geneva Motor Show.
Adding to the list of models to receive AMG’s mild-hybrid drivetrain, the new range-topping GLE model follows the bandwagon that began with the CLS53. At its heart, the GLE53 combines Mercedes-Benz’s new twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre inline–six. Paired to the motor is an electric auxiliary compressor primarily to boost low-end torque. An integrated starter motor and 48-volt electric system are also part of the mild-hybrid setup.
With a new electric motor, the GLE53 gets significant bump in output over the GLE43.
With its mild-hybrid drivetrain, the GLE53 outputs 429hp and 519Nm of torque. This is supplemented by an additional 22hp and 249Nm of torque provided by the starter motor, which acts as an electric motor for brief periods of acceleration. In all, this gives the GLE53 a power bump of 89hp and 249Nm over the previous GLE43, which was powered by a 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine without the electronic boosting technology on the GLE53.
This is mated to an eight-speed torque converter equipped AMG Speedshift TCT automatic gearbox supplying the power to all four wheels through a fully variable 4Matic+ four-wheel drive system. The car lunges to triple-digit speeds in 5.3 seconds and goes on to an electronically governed top speed of 250kph.
The GLE53 comes with Mercedes-Benz's MBUX infotainment system alongside a new Track Pace function.
The new GLE53 offers seven different driving modes including Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Trail, Sand, and Individual via a standard AMG Dynamic Select program. Alongside the EQ Boost powertrain and an improved four-wheel-drive system, AMG has also graced the GLE53 with a speed-sensitive variable ratio electromechanical steering system and Active Ride Control air suspension. In addition to this, the SUV also gets a Ride Control System with continuously adjustable damping control.
The GLE53 is Mercedes-Benz’s standing statement suggesting a completely electrified lineup in the future. Pricing for the GLE53 has not been unveiled yet which will be most likely be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show next week.
