Following an announcement on Wednesday, Volkswagen has partnered with Amazon Web Services to link up and integrate the data from 122 VW Group plants, machines and system as a way to improve its production systems and processes.
A joint statement issued by the companies stated that the American retail giant is expected to help the VW join up its plants and supply chain with over 30,000 locations and 1,500 suppliers using a data platform called “Volkswagen Industrial Cloud”.
With the help of Amazon's cloud service, Volkswagen can now detect bottlenecks and process disruptions early as well as optimise the operation of machinery and equipment.
“We will continue to strengthen production as a key competitive factor for the Volkswagen Group. Our strategic collaboration with Amazon Web Services will lay the foundation,” said Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG and Member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft responsible for ‘Production’.
“The Volkswagen Group, with its global expertise in automobile production, and Amazon Web Services, with its technological know-how, complement each other extraordinarily well. With our global industry platform, we want to create a growing industrial ecosystem with transparency and efficiency bringing benefits to all concerned.”
The duo will also make the platform available for other automakers as well as major industries.
The companies are also opening up the platform to be used by other car manufacturers and major industrial companies which are looking to migrate to the Volkswagen Industrial Cloud system. With the help of the new tech, VW can now detect supply bottlenecks and process disruptions early as well as optimise the operation of machinery and equipment.
“Volkswagen’s industrial cloud, which will reinvent its manufacturing and logistics processes, is yet another example of how Volkswagen continues to innovate and lead,” said Andy Jassy, CEO of AWS.
Volkswagen’s and AWS’s collaboration is expected to have a profound impact on efficiency and quality in production throughout Volkswagen’s global supply chain, as the German manufacturer gains access to Amazon’s expertise in the deepest cloud with the most functionality, the most innovation, the highest performance and security, and the largest community of partners and customers of any other infrastructure provider.
“We are tightly aligned across Volkswagen’s businesses to help them reimagine the future of automobile manufacturing by taking advantage of all the benefits the cloud can deliver.” said Jassy.
