Alfa Romeo. Started in Milan, Italy, Alfa’s founding year can be traced back to 1910 when Cavalier Ugo Stella acquired shares from the Societa Anonima Italiana Darracq or SAID which then turned into Anonima Lombarda Fabbruca Automobili, or what we know now as A.L.F.A. This translates to Lombardy Automobile Factory Corporation. The “Romeo” came from the entrepreneur, Nicola Romeo, who took control of the company in 1915. La meccanicia delle emozioni is the Italian term for Alfa Romeo’s brand slogan. It means “The mechanics of emotions”, and true enough, Alfa Romeo has become one of the most successful automakers dated back to the 19th century.

What made Alfa Romeo carve its name in the limelight?

Alfa’s heritage and history lie in their powerful and luxurious supercars and the men behind their wheels. The 1933 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 won Le Mans 4 times in a row from 1931-1934 and it was driven by the legendary Lord Earl Howe. Alfa Romeo’s first Formula 1 World Championship victory took place at Silverstone, England in the 1950 British Grand Prix by Giuseppe Farina.

Alfa Romeo Alfasud tops the most sold Alfa Romeos of all time with over a million units sold from 1971 – 1989. While Alfa Romeo 33 with the same units sold from 1983 – 1995.

The brand has been known for its great designers like Sergio Pininfarina for the 1955 Giuletta Spider, Franco Scaglione who designed the beautiful Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale and Elio Zagato for the Giulietta SZ. Alfa Romeo also owns some of the most iconic cars of all time including the one hailed most beautiful car ever made, the 1967 Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale, the Alfa Romeo V8 Montreal, the 1954 Alfa Romeo 2000 Sportiva, the 1962 Alfa Romeo 2600 Pininfarina Speciale, to name but few.

Going in with the trend to make all their models with full battery electric or plug-in hybrid, Alfa Romeo dropped its multi-billion-euro platform, known as the Giorgio, as it was not engineered for electrification. Alfa Romeos is embarking on full battery electric or plug-in hybrid powertrains. Their first electric model is the Alfa Romeo Tonale which has been shown as a concept at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show. It is expected to be launched in the early part of 2022 with its increased performance and plug-in hybrid variant. The future belongs to those who have a great history. And with the rich history that the Alfa Romeo holds, it is undeniable that even in these times, it still shines as one of the most remarkable brands.
